Gas Facts
Here are some interesting facts to ponder.
* What factors influence pricing? Gas prices are driven by global supply and demand for crude oil. There are also costs associated with refining, distributing and delivering gasoline that factor into the equation and affect pump prices. Adjusted for inflation, today’s pump prices are actually lower than the peak retail prices of 1981.
* How does gasoline get from the refinery to the pump? Most gasoline travels through a pipeline to large storage tanks that feed into distribution centers around the country. The final phase of the journey - from the terminal to your local service station — is made by tanker trucks. Despite all this travel, major leaks in US waters are rare these days, evidence of an industry commitment to using preventive measures
* How much do taxes affect pump prices? In a word, a lot! For the first quarter of 2008, the avg state gas tax is 28.6 cents per gallon, plus 18.4 cents per gallon federal tax making the total 47 cents per gallon. Wow.
* How is gas made?? Crude oil is a mix of hydrocarbons — molecules made up of carbon, hydrogen and other elements. The refinery processes these hydrocarbons into useful products, including gasoline, heating oil and diesel fuel. Regardless of where you live, the gasoline you use is engineered to be the cleanest ever, protecting your health and our environment.
* Why do gas prices differ in different regions? Some of the reasons are supply disruptions, environmental requirements, operating costs, and competition in local markets.
* Are oil company profits in line? Believe it or not, oil profits are in line with the average for all industries. Many government reports have confirmed that gas pricing is driven by legitimate market forces.
* Cleaner Fuel equals cleaner air. New cars on the road today runs an average of 97 percent cleaner than the average car built in 1970. This is due to a combination of cleaner gasoline and efficient engines. This means that although there are more people driving more miles in more cars than ever before - automobile-related emissions are down 41 percent since 1970.
